In addition to holdings around the world, the English were the first to began populating the North American colonies in the 17th century. These colonies would eventually go onto rebel in the later quarter of the 18th century in order to form the United States of America, however during the Golden Age of Piracy they were often the targets of pirates such as Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach, Stede Bonnet and the rest of the Flying Gang.
